New Council Leader to stand down

Councillor Bruce Boughton
Councillor Bruce Boughton who has recently been made leader of Tamworth Borough Council is to stand down at next years local elections, deciding to retire from politics in 2010.
Cllr Boughton who returned to Tamworth politics in 2006 won his seat in Spital ward after spending some time working for Wal-Mart in Canada as head of training and development. Upon his return to Politics he was voted to become portfolio for Tamworth’s Economic development and Enterprise, and earlier this year was elected to become the leader of the Borough Council, taking the reins from Cllr Jeremy Oates who resigned from the position.
Cllr Boughton though feels the time is now right to spend more time with his family. He told the Tamworth Herald:
“It may be a cliché, but I really would like to spend more time with my family,
“I have taken the role of councillor very seriously and worked really hard on my council duties since I got elected in 2006.
“I don’t think people appreciate the commitment being a councillor involves.
“I finish my full-time job at 5.30pm or thereabouts, and then four nights a week I go to the council for a couple of hours, arriving home often 8pm or later. Having served a four-year term by next May, I really feel I need a break to devote more time to my wife and sons , and to recharge my batteries.”
His decision was made before he was elected as leader of the Borough Council with then leader of the Council, Cllr Oates notified of his intentions. However, such is his standing within local politics that his colleagues elected him as leader, even if just for 12 months. Of this Cllr Boughton said:
“I am deeply honoured by the confidence shown in me by group and will work hard and with focus to fulfil my year as Leader to the best of my ability.
Cllr Boughton though has expressed a hope that this isn’t his goodbye to politics.
