A car kitted out with CCTV will be parked at busy road junctions to monitor drivers breaking the law by using their mobile phones or failing to fasten their seatbelts.

The Smart car is being used in and around the Staffordshire area during a two-week trial by the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership.

During the trial the car will be working with Traffic Enforcement Systems who owns the car and equipment which is on loan to the partnership.

Any offences will be captured by cctv but tickets will not be issued during the pilot.  However, if the partnership decides to use the car permanently, details on drivers caught breaking the law will be passed on to the police.

Staffordshire’s cabinet member for road safety, Mike Maryon, said:

“If you use your mobile while driving you are four times more likely to crash.  If you don’t wear your seatbelt you are twice as likely to die.”
