Leader of Staffordshire County Council Philip Atkins taking part in Walk to School Week with pupils and volunteers at Richard Clarke First School

Students from across Tamworth took part in a national campaign to get children to walk to school.  The National Walk to School Week which kicked off this week (May 17) encourages pupils to walk to school, making the roads around the schools safer and reduce the carbon footprint of Staffordshires Schools.

More than 160 schools across the County took part in the scheme which is being spearheaded by Staffordshire County Councils Road Safety Unit and the initiative has been hailed as a success with over 148 walking busses currently in operation throughout the whole county (if you know of any in Tamworth please let us know here at Tamworth Blog).

County Council leader, Cllr Philip Atkins hailed the imitative a success saying:

“Pupils, teachers and parents at Richard Clarke First School have really shown their support to this initiative and have launched two walking buses to accommodate all of the children who want to take part.

“It is great to see so many youngsters enjoying a bit of exercise on their way to school and that the parents are keen to leave their cars at home and take part in volunteering. Staffordshire is a leading light in the walking bus phenomenon and with so many environmental, health and safety benefits, it is easy to see why its popularity is growing ever stronger.”
