Tamworth FC 1 – 3 Histon

Tamworth FC LogoThe Lambs made it three defeats in a row at the weekend as they went down 3-1 loosers to Histon who travelled to The Lamb for the first time.

Gary Mills made no changes to the team that played during the last week but saw his team 1-0 down at half time when Histon’s Knight-Percival firing home on 27 minutes.

Tamworth made a change at half time with Russell replacing Pritchard and within 3 minutes they were level after Wylde scored on the 48th minute.  On 77 minutes though Histon took the lead for the 2nd time in the match through Knight-Percivals second goal with a glancing header.  Histon added another 4 minutes from time when Simpson prodded home, doubling the visitors lead.

Tamworth 2 – 3 York City

Tamworth FC LogoThe Lambs finally came back to Tamworth after 4 games on the road on Tuesday night (October 6) to host York City in the only Blue Square Premier match of the evening.  The game, even though the only one of the night was highly anticipated as Gary Mills Lambs were only a point behind York City who were unbeaten in 9 games.

Despite taking the lead on 18 minutes through Tait’s flicked header and plenty of possession, the Lambs went into Half time honours even after Ferrell equalised for the visitors on 40 minutes.

The 2nd half started with vigour with both teams playing attacking football, it was York City though took the lead on 61 minutes when Brodie headed home from close range.  The rain by now was pouring and York doubled their lead on the 78th minute through a diving header from Sangare.

The Lambs pressured the York defence and after believing they won a penalty (which was waved away by referee Mohareb), they set up a tense final few minutes of the game with a towering header by Tait drawing the Lambs one closer to gaining to a point.  However, it wasn’t to be and York City went back up the M1 with the points.

Guest Post – Tamworth FC Flying High

Tamworth FC LogoGreg Keane who writes for www.nonleaguefootballlive.com is our guest poster with his article on Tamworth’s succesfull start to the Blue Square Premier season.

From the four newly promoted sides into the Conference, few would have expected Tamworth FC to be the side holding their heads highest in the division almost a quarter the way through the current campaign, only having the misfortune of losing once thus far in league competition. The Midlands side do have some pedigree at non-league level however, including a cup final victory won at Wembley Stadium, watched by close to 30,000 spectators.

It certainly seems the case for the Lambs that success breeds success after returning to the Conference following on from their two-year stint in the Conference North. The side escaped the dreaded scenario of tumbling down the divisions after their relegation in 2007 and returned in glorious fashion earlier this year, attaining promotion as Champions of Conference North and securing the title in April 2009.

Lead by former Leicester City midfielder- Garry Mills- the former Notts County manager has kept faith in the majority of last season’s young squad and have taken such confidence from their early season form and performances, that they will be looking to stay in the top half of the table for the remainder of the campaign, perhaps spurred on by the now seemingly realistic aspiration of achieving a play-off spot.

Tamworth 2 – 0 Salisbury

Tamworth FC LogoThe Lambs climbed to 3rd in the Blue Square Premier league yesterday (Saturday September 19) even with an ever growing  injury list at The Lamb.

The Lambs took the lead within 12 minutes when a pin point cross from Shaw was greeted by Blackwood’s powerful header which left Bittner no chance.  It took Tamworth another 5 minutes to double the lead with a sweet volley by Shaw, leaving Salisbury, who are 22nd in the league, picking the ball out of the back of the net.

The 2nd half saw Tamworth kicking towards the Castle End and saw Tamworth probing and looking for their third but they were unable to find the break through.  Settling for a 2 – 0 win, The Lambs were elevated to 3rd in the league, not bad considering they were promoted just this season.

The Lambs were now in the flow and on 69 minutes they took the lead for the first time that afternoon through Blackwood who prodded home from 8 yards out.  Hayes and Yeading through equalised on 77 minutes through Canham which gave them a share of the points.

Chester City 1 – 2 Tamworth

Tamworth FC LogoThe Lambs took all three points from their match with Chester City on Tuesday (September 8) night.

Chester who are rooted to the bottom of the Blue Square Premier played the long ball and The Lambs did well to resist adopting the same game plan.  Their patience though paid off in the 38th minute when Tait turned home Shaws searching cross, giving the Lambs the lead going into half time.

In the 2nd half Tamworth were kicking into the empty Cestrian Stand.  On 59 minutes they extended their lead when Smith tapped in after the Chester keeper tried to clear Briscoes hooked cross.  Chester though pulled a goal back through Chadwick on 77 minutes, leading to a nervous final 15 minutes for Tamworth who were clearing their lines at any cost.  They were strong at the back though and saw out the game, taking all three points lifting the Lambs to 5th in the Blue Square Premier.

Tamworth FC started life in the Blue Square Premier by holding their own against one of the play-off semi-finalists from last season.

The Lambs travelled away to Broadhall Way on a sun-baked afternoon looking to kick on from their unbeated pre-season, bringing that form into the season.  Tamworth though were behind on 12 minutes after Briscoe was adjudged to bring Laird down.  The penalty was scored by Boylan, sending Alcock the wrong way.

The Lambs were behind but weren’t out and levelled proceedings on 29 minutes when Pritchard scored from the edge of the area.

The second half created a stalemate and the final score was 1-1, giving The Lamb’s their 1st point in the Blue Square Premier, getting the season off to a solid start.
